"I would really love to see this team grow."
Sky Tremaine just finished her last year with the
Laurier equestrian club, to which she was an integral member. Tremaine graduated with a political science degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. During her time at university, she had been a member of the equestrian club for all four years, and also served as the student leader for sport clubs. Sky was an inter level ride for the team and won the sportsmanship award.Â
As the fundraising executive for the equestrian club, her job was to secure partnerships with companies that would support the club and supply prizes for competitions. Tremaine landed several partnerships for the team such as Bahr Saddlery and Greenhawk Equestrian Sport. She also organized fundraising events for the team that often took place in the Athletic Complex or Concourse at Laurier, including a crowd favourite Krispy Kreme donut sale.Â
The Laurier equestrian club competes in the Ontario Collegiate Equestrian Association (OCEA) circuit. The circuit is split into four zones, with Laurier competing in the west division. The club enters into roughly 4 shows a year before they compete in OCEA finals at the end of season. This year, the club had an outstanding season, and finished second overall in the west division. When asked about the team's success, Tremaine says, "we've been doing a lot of training and developing our riders and their skill sets and it's been nice to see it all pay off as we came second place in our zone"Â
Tremaine encourages anyone interested to try out for the club, adding that "there is no harm in submitting a video and joining our community." The tryout process consists of first submitting a video tryout. Then, if selected, the next step is attending in person tryouts. Often, students who try out for the club have previous riding experience, however Tremaine explains that the club "really appreciate[s] anyone and everyone who has skills that they think they can offer to us and [wants to] compete with us next season."Â
Although she will not be returning for another year on the team, Tremaine has high hopes for the future of the Laurier equestrian team after such a successful season. In the future Tremaine says how, "it would be really nice to see growth [competition]-wise."Â
Graduating this past semester, Tremaine will be continuing her involvement in Equestrian as she starts a career with
 Angelstone Events.
