Wallyball Rules

Team Composition 

  • Rosters may not be larger than 6 total players 
  • A maximum of 3 of players including goalie are permitted on the court at one time 
  • A game may not proceed with less than 2 players. An exception can be made if an injury occurs during a game. 

Game Procedures 

  • All matches are a best out of 3 sets. The first two sets are to 25 points, win by 2 and capped at 30. The third set, if necessary is to 15 points with a hard cap 
  • If the minimum number of players are not present, the team will default 
  • Default matches result in a match score of 2-0 
  • If both teams default, it will result in a match score of 0-0 
  • Captains are responsible for rock, paper, and scissors. The winner will determine which team will serve first, the looser will pick sides 

Rules

American Wallyball Association Rules Apply with the following adaptations 
  • Upon service, if the ball hits, or goes above the red lining or the black strap there is an automatic reserve. If the ball hits the back wall, it is a loss of serve and a point is awarded to the receiving team 
  • During the rally if the ball contacts the red lining or black strap the rally is continued. 
  • While receiving, if the ball hits two of the receiving team’s walls before a touch has been made, the point is awarded to the opposing team. This includes if a ball hits one wall of each team.  
  • While receiving, after the ball has been contacted the ball may hit multiple walls. 
  • If Team A hits the roof and the ball lands on Team B’s side, Team B will get the point. 
  • If Team A hits the roof and it stays on their side, they can play the ball. 
  • When playing on the side closest to the door - if a ball goes out after first contact = re-serve. If a ball goes out on second or third contact the point is awarded to the other team. 
  • A player cannot reach over the net to play the ball at any time. 
  • A player cannot touch the net at any time 
  • Ball may be played off the net during the rally and off the serve. 
  • Reaching over the net is a violation, except under these conditions:  
    • When executing a follow-through 
    • When blocking a ball, which is in the opponent’s court but is being returned 
  • During game play the black rope will act as part of the net. (If a ball hits it and goes over, play on, but no player may touch the net) 
  • A player must not block or attack a serve. 
  • Maximum of three contacts with the ball per side. 
  • Player must not hit the ball twice in a succession (A block is not considered a hit). 
  • The blocker must not contact the ball until after the opponent who is attempting to return the ball makes contact. Except to block the third party. 
  • No jump serves are allowed 
  • Servers may only take one step onto the court 
  • Underhand serves may go off one wall (excluding the back wall) 
  • Overhand serves cannot go off any walls 
  • Players must rotate positions on the court, though any player can jump at the net 
  • Players will rotate in a clockwise manner 
  • If more than 3 players are in attendance, the server rotates out 
  • Switching positions will be allowed after the serve only 
  • Failure to serve in the correct order will result in a loss of serve and a point awarded to the opposing team.
