Volleyball Rules

Team Composition 

  • Rosters may not be larger than 12 total players
  • A maximum of 6 players are permitted on the court at one time.
  • A match may not proceed with less than 4 players. An exception can be made if an injury occurs during a match
  • In the CoRec league, teams may not have more than 4 players of one gender on the court at one time

Match Procedures 

  • All matches are a best out of 3 sets. The first two sets are to 25 points, win by 2 and capped at 30. The third set, if necessary is to 15 points with a hard cap
  • If the minimum number of players are not present, the team will default
  • Default matches result in a match score of 2-0
  • If both teams default, it will result in a match score of 0-0
  • Captains are responsible for rock, paper, and scissors. The winner will determine which team will serve first, the looser will pick sides

Rules

Volleyball Canada Indoor Rules Apply with the following adaptations 
  • All sets are scored by rally point. A point will be rewarded every time the ball it put in play
  • The referee must be notified the formation when beginning a set with less than 6 players
    • For example, 3 at the net and 2 at the back. As players rotate, this formation must be maintained throughout the match
  • Players rotate each time they win back the serve. If more than 6 players are signed in for the match, the previous server will rotate out and the substitution will come in. During this process, a substitution may be skipped to maintain on the court gender requirements
  • During the course of play, the ball may be played by any part of the body. However, kicking motions are not permitted
  • Double hits, pushes, and lifts will be monitored, and referees may use discretion based on the flow of the game
  • It is a point or less of serve:
    • A player serves out of order
    • A player steps over the serving line while serving
    • A player makes contact with any part of the net
  • Reaching over the net is a violation, except in the following situations:
    • On a follow-through when spiking
    • Blocking an opponent’s attack on the 3rd hit after the opponent has contacted the ball
  • Blocks do not count as a touch on the ball and blockers are able to contact the ball immediately after their block
  • Teams in the Open League may play with a Libero. Teams that play with a Libero must notify the referee, wear the same-coloured shirt/jersey and the Libero must wear a different colour.
    • Teams in the Co-Rec League are not permitted to use a Libero
