Basketball 3v3 Rules

Team Composition 

  • Team rosters may consist of up to 6 players 
  • A maximum of 3 players are permitted on the court at one time 
  • A game may not proceed with less than 2 players. An exception can be made if an injury occurs during a game 

Game Procedures 

  • Each game will consist of two 15 minute halves, with a 5 minute break in between 
  • Each team is allowed one 30 second timeout per half 
  • Substitutions are allowed after a basket is scored or after the play stops 
  • The game will begin with one player on each team shooting for the first possession  
    • The opposite team will begin with first possession in the second half 
  • Baskets are worth 1 point or 2 if scored behind the three point arc 
  • After a basket is scored, the possession goes to the team scored upon and they start at the 3-point arc 
  • Players are responsible for stating the score before each play if there is no one available to record the score on the game sheet 
  • Tie games will be decided by sudden death overtime. Teams will shoot free throws to decide possession 

Rules

FIBA Rules Apply with the following adaptations and details 
  • The following FIBA violations apply: dribbling, travelling, goaltending, offensive 3 in the key 
  • Following each change of possession (e.g., a turnover) the ball must be cleared beyond the three-point arc before trying to score 
    • The ball is considered cleared when both feet are behind the three point arc 
    • If the ball changes possession and the ball is not cleared, and the player shoots and scores, no basket is awarded, and the possession goes to the opposing team at the top of the three point arc 
  • After checking the ball with their opponent the player putting the ball in play must do so by passing the ball to a teammate (they have no dribble, must pass) 
  • Fouls are called by the offense 
  • Fouls in the act of shooting will result in 1 free throw for 1 point or 2 free throws for 2 points if the shot attempt was behind the 3-point arc 
  • If the offensive player makes the basket while being fouled, he/she will shoot 1 free throw 
  • Common fouls that aren’t in the act of shooting will result in the team who was fouled to begin with possession of the ball at the top of the three point arc 
  • If a team commits 6 fouls within a half, every additional foul is a free throw 
  • Time does not stop for fouls, only if there is an injury 
  • While the League Convenor will be circulating the gymnasium, it is also the responsibility of team captains to report unsportsmanlike conduct to the League Convenor to address
